Experience history in the Spessart
The towns in the Main-Spessart region have been able to preserve what they have grown into and retain their medieval town centers. Here you can stroll and shop or sit in a street café. Don’t miss a visit to the famous moated castle of Mespelbrunn, also romantically known as the “fairytale castle”. In the dense forests, you can sit under ancient oaks and dream of the time of the Spessart robbers. You might even be attacked by robbers – who knows? With a bit of luck, you might even be able to spot some of the region’s wildlife. Follow in the footsteps of the famous and notorious hunter Johann Adam Hasenstab, who was born in Rothenbuch in 1716, was declared outlawed for poaching and was only found and shot by the Elector’s hunters after several years of searching for bounty money.

Spessart is pure nature!
The Main-Spessart region is also characterized by a varied, heavily wooded landscape and well-preserved medieval buildings. Here you can follow in the footsteps of the infamous Spessart robbers through legendary forests and meadows, mountains and valleys. If you want to visit castles and palaces and museums, you’ll get your money’s worth here. The Hafenlohr valley near Rothenbuch is particularly attractive, an old cultural landscape that is ideal for cyclists or motorcyclists who prefer a leisurely, scenic tour. Narrow, winding roads stretch almost endlessly through the protected valley, whose sensitive wet meadows may not be entered.
The fish-rich river Hafenlohr, which has its source in Rothenbuch, meanders through unspoilt forests, and you can enjoy the tasty products of local fish farmers in the numerous restaurants. The hiking trail named after the poacher Hasenstab also begins in Rothenbuch. It starts at the source of the Hafenlohr in Rothenbuch and leads right through the Spessart.
